The Blackmagic DeckLink Capture source casts output from any compatible playback device (e.g. PC, Mac, smartphone, tablet, gaming console, etc.) on a display or group of displays in a video wall.

Please consider the following points before using this source:

  • If you are using Userful 9.7 or earlier, you must install the Blackmagic Design Capture Card Driver from Control Center > Settings > Check for Available Packages. As of Userful 9.8 and higher versions, the Blackmagic driver is included by default.
  • Supported Capture Card is installed in the Userful server and firmware is updated.
  • Directly connected HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) encrypted content will not play unless it is first run through an HDCP capable splitter.

Creating Blackmagic Decklink Capture source

Mapping allows you to bind a specific display or video wall to the Blackmagic DeckLink Capture source. To create this source:

  • Click on Mapping > New Source New Source Icon.png button. From the drop-down menu select Blackmagic DeckLink Capture as the source type and give a name.

  • Select the Input device from the drop-down menu.

  • Select the Mode from the drop-down list (output resolution and frames per second).

  • Select the connection type from the drop-down menu.

  • Select a scaling option.

  • Enable sound only if it is required.

  • Enter the number of pixels to be cropped from left, right, top and bottom of the captured external device.

  • Click "OK" to complete the process.

Map Displays to the Blackmagic DeckLink Source

Once source is created, displays or video wall can be "mapped" or assigned by simply dragging-and-dropping the display and video wall icons to the source. To change the source configuration (e.g., to change the input) click on the source name to open the "Edit Source" window and make the changes.

Changes will not take effect until the "Apply" button is clicked.

The content of your captured external device will play on the display or video wall mapped to this source.

Note: Only one display or video wall can be mapped to a single blackmagic capture source (i.e., single blackmagic capture card input) at a time, to play the same content on multiple displays/video walls use Mirror Group Configuration.

Troubleshooting Tips

This section outlines solution to the common problems encountered while using Blackmagic DeckLink Capture Cards.

Card not detected in the Control Center


  • Firmware not updated
Open terminal and at the command line type in the following command (sudo or root privileges are required through out the procedure) and reboot the system:
   $ sudo BlackmagicFirmwareUpdater update 0 
  • Blackmagic Design driver not installed
Navigate to the Settings page in Control Center and install the desktopvideo package from Check for Available Packages
  • Blackmagic Design driver installed but system not rebooted
Reboot the system

If the steps mentioned above do not lead to a solution, install Media Express using sudo yum install mediaexpress command on terminal. Manually verify that the capture card can detect and playback the plugged in source content in media express. If it fails, then there is a problem with source configuration rather than the software itself.

Black Screen(s) when launching the displays or video wall


  • Incorrect Color Space
Verify that the color space of the capture source is correct for your card. Please see Supported Capture Cards for details, if in doubt use YUV or YCbCr.
  • Non-Broadcast Resolutions not supported
If the source you're trying to capture is a laptop or PC and your display is not a broadcast resolution, duplicating its screen to the capture card would not work with Linux or MacOS. Resolutions such as 1366x768, 1440x900 or 1600x900 are only supported in Windows (Windows supports cloning of displays with different resolutions). To fix this:
  • in Windows (set your desktop to Duplicate , then change the capture card resolution in Display Settings)
  • in Linux (verify that mirror display option is unchecked in the Display Settings)
  • in Mac (verify that mirror display option is unchecked in the Display Settings)
This will enable your laptop to correctly detect the display resolution from the capture card.
Note: Laptops with resolutions such as 720p, 1080p, and 4k will all work plug and play.
  • Remove any and all Splitters/Switches from the set up. Connect the source directly to the capture card.
  • HDCP content not supported
Verify that your capture source doesn't have an encrypted HDMI feed (HDCP). Note: If its a PC or Laptop or Game Console, verify that you're not playing any HDCP content (e.g. DVD or Blu-ray) or first run the HDMI signal through an HDCP compliant splitter before connecting it to the capture card to eliminate this potential cause.
