Using Network Zero Clients

Network zero client devices, also called "Displays" use network cabling (e.g. Cat-5e and Cat-6a) to connect zero client devices to the Userful host.
USB zero client devices, use USB 2.0 complaint cables to connect zero client devices to the Userful host. It is highly recommended that cable specifications of at least 24 AWG (power) and 28 AWG (signal) should be used as low quality USB cables can create system instability issues. This document provides guidelines and instructions for using Network zero client devices.
Userful™ software appliance is designed to support network zero-client devices (using the Elite Silicon® (EST) chipset) with SMSC® chipsets.
Following zero client devices are fully tested and recommended for use with the Userful™ software appliance:

Setup of displays should be done after the installation is complete.
Some things to remember
- When using network zero client devices, it is important to keep one display connected to the onboard video card in order to see startup messages.
- We recommend the use of homogeneous (all one type and model) network zero client devices.
- Network zero-client devices MUST be on the same subnet as the Userful host to function.
- If there is more than one Useful host on a subnet, they must have unique hostnames. This is because network zero client devices are locked to a Userful host based on the system name (or "hostname"). Having duplicate host names on one subnet will cause an unstable behavior of the network devices.
- For optimal performance and reliability, zero clients should be set to static IPs (This can be done from the Control Center) and isolated from other network traffic as much as possible
- A maximum of 25 zero clients per subnet should be maintained.
Setting Up Displays
- Position one display to be plugged into the system tower; this is the onboard display. Input devices (keyboard and mouse) can be plugged directly into the system tower (in either PS/2 or USB connections).
- Connect one display to each zero-client device.
- Using Cat-5e (or Cat-6a) network cable, connect each device to a gigabit-capable switch. See example to the right.
- Connect the Userful host to the switch using Cat-5e (or Cat-6a) network cable.
- Ensure all devices, hubs, and displays are connected to a UPS or surge protected outlets, if necessary.
- Turn on the Userful host when ready.
Adding or Removing Network Zero-Client Devices
To add a display (assuming your license supports that number of displays), simply connect another zero-client device and use the Control Center to attach the device to the Userful host.
Please note: it may take up to 60 seconds for the added display to be recognized by the Userful host. No reboot is necessary.
Displays can be removed simply by unplugging the device (This can be done with the system running).
