[edit] What is this .docx/.pptx/.xlsx format?
These file formats are the new document formats for Microsoft Office 2007. So new, in fact, that none of the earlier releases of Microsoft Office support it natively, nor does OpenOffice 2.x or other major office suites.
[edit] Should I be using these new formats for my documents?
Right now, the answer is no. Except in rare cases where certain features of the new formats are used, there is no reason to use them right now. In fact, the use of them is problematic in that the only office suite that currently supports them out of the box is Microsoft Office 2007 (which makes it hard to send the documents to other people). Therefore, right now the best way to save your documents is in the older .doc, .ppt, or .xls file formats.
[edit] Can I open these documents in Userful Desktop?
Yes. However, there are currently a few restrictions in their use.
There are several ways to open one of these files:
- Save the document to the desktop and double-click the icon. This will load the file into OpenOffice.
- You can open the file directly from Firefox. This will also load the file into OpenOffice.
- If your document is on a CD or USB keyring, you can also access them from there as well.
Currently, the ability to open .docx file directly from OpenOffice is unavailable. Rest assured, Userful is working with OpenOffice.org and other open-source software groups to gain this functionality as soon as possible.
