Introduction

Userful Multiplier™ makes managing your license keys quick and easy. For each multi-station computer system, simply install the Multiplier software, enter an activation code (purchased from Userful), then automatically connect to Userful's online licensing server.

As part of the activation process, your web browser submits basic system information to Userful -- including your system's MAC address, Linux distribution and version, and video cards. The license key file(s) are installed automatically, and take effect without rebooting the system.

Should you ever need to reload a license key (for example, if a system must be reinstalled), your remaining licenses will not be affected because each license is unique to one system.

  • Note: Userful Multiplier software must be installed and running on your PC prior to retrieving your license key(s). To install, please refer to the README file, which is included in the downloaded zip file and is also available from the Userful Control Panel.

Obtain or Purchase an Activation Code

(If you already have an activation code, skip to the next section.)

If you have already installed Userful Multiplier from the Userful website and wish to obtain a Free 2-user activation code:

  1. The Userful Control Panel
    The Userful Control Panel
Run the Multiplier program. Open the Userful Control Panel (shown at right).
    • How you access the Userful Control Panel depends on your Linux distribution. Try these locations first:
    • Userful Desktop/Fedora/Redhat/Ubuntu: Applications > System Tools > Userful
    • Suse: Applications > Utilities > More Programs > Userful
    • NLD: Applications > Accessories > More > Userful
    • If "Userful" or "Userful Control Panel" does not appear in one of the above locations, the control panel can be launched from the command line using:
      /usr/share/umx-utils/control-panel.py
      .
  2. The Userful Activation Tool.
    The Userful Activation Tool.
Click the Install License button on the Control Panel to launch the activation tool (shown at right).
  3. Click the Launch Browser to get activation code button on the Activation Tool to start the registration process using your web browser. The website will walk you through steps to complete your request for the Activation Code.
    • Note: To complete the web-based registration process from the command line, use:
      /usr/share/umx-utils/register.sh
  4. On completion of registration you will receive a confirmation message containing your unique activation code that will be sent to the e-mail address you provided.

To purchase an activation code online (for orders within the U.S. and Canada):

  1. Shop for all your Userful Multiplier needs at the Userful Store.
  2. Choose the number of Multiplier bundles (one per planned workstation) and complete checkout. You will need to register as a customer to make a purchase.
  3. Once your order is processed, you will be sent an e-mail with your activation code, where to download Userful Multiplier software and Web links to Userful Support documentation.

To purchase an activation code from a Userful Partner (for orders outside North America):

  1. For international orders, please e-mail partner@userful.com or fill out this form.
  2. Once your order is processed, you will be sent an e-mail with your activation code, where to download Userful Multiplier software and Web links to Userful Support documentation.

Using the Activation Code to Obtain and Install the License Key(s)

  • Note: You need Internet access to license Userful Multiplier™
  • With the Userful Control Panel running (see above for instructions), click the Install License button to open the activation tool. Specify the number of workstations to be activated, then enter your unique activation code (Note: the code is case-sensitive) and click Download and install License. The Userful licensing application will then automatically download, install and activate your license key file.
  • Note: This activation process can also be run from the command line. To do this, run the install-license.sh script providing your activation code as the only argument. For example (where 12345678 is your unique activation code):
    /usr/share/umx-utils/install-license.sh 12345678

Manually Installing a License Key (without Internet)

The process described above requires a working internet connection. In the event that you need to license a system with no Internet connection, email the MAC address of the PC you need to license along with your activation code to your Userful reseller. They will generate a license key and respond to your email with a license key as an attachment which you must then manually copy as follows:

  • Copy the purchased license file ##:##:##:##:##:##.1Box.info or just 1Box.info into the /etc/X11 folder on your Linux system.
    • Note: you will need to either su to root or sudo to complete this task. You may need to use a USB key or writable CD to copy the file to the unconnected PC.
