Introduction
Many customers have asked for Microsoft Office integration with DiscoverStation. With the development of DiscoverStation 5, we are working on being able to provide this feature. Below are the instructions for setting up DiscoverStation to use WINE, which allows it to run certain applications from Microsoft Office.

Installation/Configuration

(1) Install WINE
- Start a session and log into Administrator Mode.
- Double-click on the
Advanced Toolsicon on the desktop. - Find the
Install Packagesicon and double-click on it. - Use the
Yum Extenderpackage installer tool to install the WINE package. - Click
Installon the top left of the window. - In the list of packages that should appear, scroll down and find the
winepackage and click on the box next to it to select it. (There are other packages beginning with "wine", but you do not need to check those.) - Click the
Add to Queuebutton at the lower right of the window. - Click the
Queuebutton on the left of the window. This will show all packages to be added to DiscoverStation. There may be other packages listed that are necessary to support WINE. - Click the
Process Queuebutton on the lower right of the window. - Click
OKas required. - Once all the packages are installed, close
Yum Extender. - Log out of the session.
(2) Installing Microsoft Office
Follow these steps carefully!
- Start a session.
- DO NOT GO INTO ADMINISTRATOR MODE. You must complete this part of the procedure as a regular user.
- Double-click on
Computeron the desktop. - Find the Windows program installer (usually in the CD/DVD drive) and double-click on the icon (usually called
setup.exeorautorun.exe). - Choose the
Custom Installoption. - Click
Next.
- De-select all installation options. This will force the installer to create the necessary filesystem and registry structures, but not actually copy most of the application and support files.
- Click
Nextto proceed with the installation process until it is finished. The installation process may abnormally end at this point with certain versions of Microsoft Office. - Use the
File Browserto find the program installer again, and double-click on it.
- This time, choose the
Add/Remove componentsoption. - Click on
Next. - Select all desired components this time. We currently only recommend selecting Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. The other applications have not yet been tested.
- Click
Upgrade. - Follow any on-screen instructions to finish the installation.
(3) WINE Configuration
- Configure/activate/customize the WINE/Office environment as desired.
- To browse the "Windows" C: drive, double-click the
Station #'s Documentsicon on the desktop to open a File Browser. PressCtrl-Hto show hidden files, then double-click on the.winefolder. Applications will be stored in.wine/drive_c/Program Files/. You may run a Windows application by double-clicking its .EXE file.
- To browse the "Windows" C: drive, double-click the
- Double-click on the
Advanced Toolsicon on the desktop. - Double-click the
Save WINE Configurationicon.
- You should see a
Copying WINE installationdialog pop up.
- Tweak your WINE configuration as necessary:
- Store the WINE configuration package:
Administrator Mode > Desktop > Advanced Tools > Save WINE configuration - To amend a WINE configuration, log in to a session that uses it, then proceed to install additional software or delete stuff. You must then store the configuration again as described above.
- Store the WINE configuration package:
- Modify one or more Session Profiles in Userful Manager to load the installed WINE configuration when it starts:
- Log into Userful Manager.
- Find the Session Profile you wish to change.
- In a Session Profile, find
Session Programs. - Under
Run Type, selectpre-session. - Supply the command
/opt/userful/bin/wine-load-pie.sh
- Save the Session Profile.
- Find the appropriate computer and
Apply Configuration. - Go to a station and use
Update Configuration.
