What is a BIOS?

The BIOS is what controls the hardware before Userful software takes control of it. Therefore, having the correct BIOS settings is essential to the proper functioning of the system. When you buy a system from Userful, the BIOS settings should be correct already. However, there are rare instances where the BIOS will need to be changed. This guide will show you how to access the BIOS.

NOTE - You should under no circumstances change your BIOS settings unless directed so by Userful Support. Changing these settings without proper knowledge can leave your system unable to boot up or damage it permanently.

Accessing the BIOS

Getting into the BIOS can be a simple process, however the exact procedure can change depending on the manufacturer of the motherboard. When the computer first turns on, begin by pressing the key described as the setup key on the first screen. On the Userful X1000 and the X100, this key is "F2". On different machines, the setup key could also be "F1" or the Delete key.

The window of opportunity to access the BIOS is relatively short, and it's easy to miss it. Once you see a screen that reads "GNU GRUB" at the top, then you will need to restart your machine and try again.

If you continue to have problems trying different buttons, then check to see if your keyboard is plugged into a hub. If your keyboard is plugged into a hub, remove the keyboard from the hub and plug it directly into the machine. There have been very rare instances where the use of a PS/2 keyboard is necessary (due to the USB not working when the machine first boots up), but this has been a problem only with much older machines.
